St. Nicholas-Hospital/Cusanusstift, Bernkastel-Kues. Manuscript 42
(κ)

Photographs ---- Catalogue  ---- Other details ---- About the library

-----------------------------

The manuscript contains 11 works separated by blank leaves; third of these is the Apologeticum.  Interestingly the explicit refers to the Institutiones of Lactantius, so I think we may reasonably infer that it was copied from a manuscript in which it was combined, as elsewhere, with works of Lactantius.  Numbers appear in the margin -- these look like page numbers from somewhere.

The work is on paper.  The manuscript was once Cusanus 10, according to Hoppe; the spine (below) has a paper label on with 42.

Note that in the photographs that follow, the pages should all be the same colour; however the weather was rainy when I did the rectos and sunshine when I came to do the versos. [Manuscript photographed Tuesday 3rd May, 2005]

OTHER DETAILS:

All the manuscripts in the collection were microfilmed in the 1960's, according to the library.  Copies can  be bought from the Cusanus-Institut at Trier. Contact Dr. Harald Schwaetzer (E-Mail: harald.schwaetzer@uni-trier.de) for details.  However I have not investigated this.

ABOUT THE CUSANUSSTIFT AND ACCESS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

The Cusanusstift itself is a collection of buildings, including a wine-museum, old-people's home, all founded by Nicholas of Cusa.  The buildings are next to the bridge across the Moselle, on the right as you come over the bridge into Bernkastel-Kues.  An underground car-park is directly opposite, the Alter Forum Bahnhof, where you get a ticket at the entrance and pay at a machine when you want to leave.  Bernkastel is 17 miles from the budget airport, Frankfurt-Hahn; follow the signs for it from the airport; follow signs for Mainz to return (I spent quite a lot of time lost in the woods in the Moselle valley before I found my way back).  Car hire at the airport was cheapest from Alamo.

A catalogue of all the manuscripts exists.  A large number of the manuscripts were given by Nicholas of Cues to his foundation; other have been bought since.  A number were sold in the 19th century to Lord Harley and are now in the British Library.

The address of the Cusanusstift is:

St. Nikolaus-Hospital.
Cusanusstraße 2
54470 Bernkastel-Kues
Tel. +49 (0) 6531-2260
Fax +49 (0) 6531-94087
Email g.n.cusanusstift@t-online.de (Gabrielle Neusius, who speaks some English).

Permission must be obtained from the Rector to photograph, and a charge of 80 EUR an hour is levied for the cost of supervision (because there is only one staff member most of the time, and the library has to shut while you work).  However they are very helpful people.
